The Name Development Blog has an interesting post on the Seven Deadly Sins of Company Branding. It’s a smart little list that takes off from the original list of seven; Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy, Pride. There are some interesting examples of brand naming misteps that are linked to each of the sins. Lust is an inordinate craving for the love of a name at all costs, like the brand name Adultria from Philip Morris that was embroiled in controversy from the moment it was launched. Or gluttony, the sad fate that Cingular had to endure, when it went on a binge of acquiring companies, only to be swallowed up by a brand name (AT&T) that it had bought into. Read more from NameWire.
